When Sarah gained word that her son Isaac was almost sacrificed she at first relived and then she died. Avraham purchased the Machpeilah Cave from the Hittites. By doing this Avraham bought the burial site of Adam and Eve. G-d directed Avraham’s steps to by this land.

G-d whispers in my ear to read certain Torah passages many mornings. This was one of them and the other was Genesis 23:8. Yes we Jews are to be separated out for G-d’s use only however it is incumbent upon us to know that we have a Holy mission to share with the rest of the world HaShem the one true living G-d.

We are to live G-dly lives so the rest of the world can know and see the true resurrection power and freedom of giving our lives to the one true living G-d.

When the news reached Sarah that Isaac was nearly sacrificed, the shock of his near loss coupled with the relief of his life being spared was too much for her to bear, and she died. Abraham purchased the Machpeilah Cave and the surrounding field from the local Hittites for her burial grounds in Hebron.

[Abraham said to the Hittites,] “Allow me [to buy] a burial ground among you.” Genesis 23:4

The Machpeilah Cave is the burial site of Adam and Eve, the first human beings; as such, it originally belonged to all humanity. In purchasing it, Abraham articulated G‑d’s intention that the mission originally given to humanity as a whole now be passed on to the Jewish people. By accepting this task, the Jewish people were fundamentally separating themselves from the rest of humanity and assuming the role of its mentors. It is our challenge to recognize this destiny today, as well.1Likutei Sichot, vol. 15, pp. 145–154; vol. 5, pp. 338–344; Sefer HaSichot 5748, vol. 1, pp. 85–89.
